Bueno

GoodWell… / OK / Right then
Sketch for Bueno: Well… / OK / Right then

Bueno means “good”, but in conversation it's mostly a filler meaning “well”, “OK” or “right then”. Bueno, me voy means “right, I'm off”, with nothing good about it. It opens answers, closes topics and accepts plans. In Mexico, ¿Bueno? is also how people answer the phone, a habit that surprises everyone else.

Not the Bueno you were looking for? As an adjective, bueno simply means “good”: un libro bueno (“a good book”). Before a masculine noun it shortens to buen: un buen día (“a good day”). And if you came here for Kinder Bueno, that's just the brand name borrowing the Spanish word.

How people really use it

Ending a visit.

  1. Andrés

Bueno, ya es tarde. Me voy.

    Right, it's late. I'm off.

  2. Lucía

    ¿Ya? Bueno, gracias por venir.

    Already? OK, thanks for coming.

Accepting a plan without much enthusiasm.

  1. Mateo

    ¿Vamos al cine el domingo?

Shall we go to the cinema on Sunday?

  2. Camila

Bueno… pero elijo yo la película.

OK… but I'm choosing the film.

A phone call in Mexico.

  1. Diego

    ¿Bueno?

    Hello?

  2. Sofía

Hola, Diego, soy Sofía. ¿Tienes un minuto?

Hi Diego, it's Sofía. Have you got a minute?

🤷 Depende del País

Bueno as “well” or “OK” works everywhere. The phone greeting is where countries split.

Register and sound

Register. Neutral. Works with anyone, in any setting. Only the tone changes it: a bright bueno is “great, OK”, a long buenooo is “fine, if I must”.

Sounds like. BWEH-no, two syllables. As a filler it often stretches: buenooo… while the speaker thinks.

Questions people ask

Why do Mexicans answer the phone with bueno?

Nobody knows for sure. The most repeated story is that early phone lines were bad, and bueno checked the line was working. Whatever the origin, ¿Bueno? is the standard Mexican “hello?” on the phone.

Is bueno a filler word?

Yes, very often. In conversation bueno usually means “well”, “OK” or “right then”, and opens or closes what someone is saying.

What is the difference between bueno and bien?

Bueno is an adjective (“good”) or a filler (“well”). Bien is an adverb: estoy bien (“I'm fine”), habla bien (“she speaks well”).

How good is your Spanish, really? Two minutes, real audio, and a level at the end.
