¿Qué tal?

¿Qué tal? means “how's it going?” or “how are things?”. It's a friendly, all-purpose greeting that works everywhere. Add a noun and it asks about that thing: ¿Qué tal el viaje? means “how was the trip?”. Answer with bien (“good”), muy bien or más o menos (“so-so”), and ask it back: ¿y tú?

Register and sound
Register. Neutral and friendly. Fine with friends, coworkers and acquaintances. With an older stranger, ¿Cómo está usted? is more formal.
Sounds like. keh-TAHL, almost one word, stress at the end. The l is light, never the dark English “l” in “tall”.
Questions people ask
How do you answer ¿qué tal?
Bien, gracias (“good, thanks”), muy bien (“very good”) or más o menos (“so-so”), then ask it back: ¿y tú? Like “how's it going?”, it rarely wants a long answer.
What is the difference between ¿qué tal? and ¿cómo estás?
Both mean “how are you?”. ¿Qué tal? is a little more casual and can ask about a thing (¿qué tal la película?). ¿Cómo estás? asks about the person.
What does ¿qué tal si…? mean?
“How about…?” or “what if…?”, to suggest something: ¿qué tal si salimos? means “how about we go out?”.
